defines the woman's exact face, hair and outfit. defines the man's exact face, hair and outfit. defines the cat's exact coat, markings and eyes. Take only identity, hair, coat and clothing from the three sheets; the white studio backgrounds and the neutral standing poses stay behind. THE RULE: the cat and the man are one being. Indoors he is the cat. Outdoors he is the man. The doorway is the switch, and it works both ways. To these two this is an ordinary Tuesday and neither of them ever reacts to it. WHO IS IN EACH SHOT: every shot holds exactly one of the two forms. From 0 to 6.5 seconds the cat is on screen and the man has not appeared yet. From 6.5 to 24 seconds the man is on screen and the cat is elsewhere in the story, not in the picture. From 24 to 30 seconds the cat is on screen again and the man is elsewhere. The two forms share the same warm amber-brown eyes, and that is the only thing that gives them away. HOW THE TWO CHANGES ARE FILMED: each change is one continuous shot with the camera locked off and no cut. A thick puff of white fur swells out, fills the whole frame for about half a second so the frame is white fur and nothing else, then scatters and clears. The other form is standing in exactly that spot, the same size in frame. The first change happens as her foot lands outside the front door; the second as they step back in. CLOTHING: from 0 to 4.5 seconds and again from 27 to 30 seconds she wears an oversized cream cotton pajama shirt and shorts, wrinkled from sleep. From 4.5 to 27 seconds she wears the look from with a small vintage film camera on a strap around her neck. The man arrives already dressed in the look from and stays in it. His outfit is different every day, and today it is this one. LANGUAGE: Japanese only. The woman speaks three short lines. The man stays silent with his lips closed and answers with his body. Passers-by are a low murmur under the room tone. STYLE: A day-in-the-life short, thirty seconds, about twenty-seven timed shots, hard cuts on action, except the two transformations which run as single continuous shots. Bright spring daylight moving from morning to evening, handheld with a small natural drift, shallow focus landing on hands and faces, honest film grain and slightly imperfect framing. Signs, price cards and packaging carry shapes and pictures only. SETTING: A small Japanese one-room apartment and the streets around it. Inside: a low bed under a curtained window, a narrow kitchen counter, a cat bowl and a bag of dry food on the floor, a bathroom sink with a mirror, and a genkan step with two pairs of shoes lined up by the front door. Outside: a sunlit residential alley with concrete walls, potted plants, a leaning bicycle and a humming vending machine; a covered market street with an open fishmonger's stall, whole fish on crushed ice under a bare bulb, plastic crates and a hanging cloth curtain; and a shaded corner by a stone wall where they stop for a photograph. The lights stay as they are all day; the light changes because the sky and the location change. SOUND: Location sound only, for the whole film. There is no music anywhere and no score of any kind — every sound comes from something visible or physically present in the scene. The apartment is quiet: a fridge hum, a ticking clock, dry food rattling into a ceramic bowl, a cat crunching, water running in a sink. The instant the front door opens, that quiet is replaced by the street — sparrows, a distant bicycle bell, a vending machine hum, sneakers and heavy boots on asphalt. The market is the loudest point of the film: overlapping voices, a shovel in crushed ice, crates being stacked. The camera shutter and film wind are sharp and close. When the front door shuts at the end the street is cut off and the quiet room returns, and the last sound is a cat purring. 0–1.5 sec — WAKE UP Close-up in bed: a white paw presses down on the sleeping woman's cheek. Her eyes open and the cat's face is right in front of hers, whiskers almost touching. She blinks once and stays where she is. 1.5–2.5 sec — UP She sits on the edge of the bed in her cream pajamas, hair flattened on one side. The cat drops off the duvet and walks out of frame ahead of her, plumed tail up. 2.5–4.5 sec — MORNING Dry food rattles into the ceramic bowl and the cat pushes its whole face in, ruff spreading over the rim. Cut: at the bathroom sink she throws water on her face with both hands, eyes shut, water running off her chin. 4.5–6.5 sec — THE DOOR Dressed in the look with the camera on its strap, she crouches in the genkan and scoops the cat up in both hands against her chest, then pushes the front door open with one foot. The quiet room tone is still the only sound. 6.5–9.5 sec — THE CHANGE (one continuous locked-off shot) She steps over the threshold into the bright alley and the street sound floods in all at once. As her foot lands outside, a thick puff of white fur bursts from her arms, fills the whole frame, and clears. The man is standing in exactly that spot, dressed in the look, her hands still raised in front of his chest. Both of them treat it as nothing. She lowers her hands, looks him up and down once like a judge, lifts the camera and takes one photograph. MOUTH OPENS SPEAKS OUT LOUD — dry, deciding: 「お、今日のコーデは合格」 9.5–13 sec — STREET They walk side by side down the alley. He is a man and still entirely a cat: he shuts his eyes and lifts his face into the sun, his head snaps around to follow a bird along a wall, and he steps only on the shaded slabs. She walks straight ahead, used to all of it. 13–16 sec — NEIGHBOUR An old woman sweeping her doorway looks up and greets them, treating him as an ordinary young man. The three exchange a short bow and a small laugh. He bows a half-beat late, copying her. 16–20 sec — THE FISH They pass an open fishmonger's stall, whole fish laid out on crushed ice. His head snaps around and his feet stop dead. Quick cuts: his nostrils working, his eyes locked on the ice without blinking, his hand drifting toward the fish all by itself. She hooks his sleeve without breaking stride and tows him past. His head stays turned backward until the stall is out of sight. 20–24 sec — THE PHOTO In a shaded corner by a stone wall she holds the camera out at arm's length for a picture of the two of them. He looks anywhere but the lens: first at something moving off to the side, then up at a bird overhead. She turns his face back to centre with one finger under his jaw, and on the third try the shutter clicks. MOUTH OPENS SPEAKS OUT LOUD — flat, matter-of-fact: 「こういう日は残しとかないと」 24–27 sec — THE CHANGE BACK (one continuous locked-off shot) Evening light in the corridor. They step in through the front door and it swings shut, cutting the street off. As they land inside, a thick puff of white fur bursts from beside her, fills the whole frame, and clears. Her hand is empty and her arm drops a little from the sudden lightness. The cat sits on the floor in exactly that spot, tail around its paws, looking up at her. 27–30 sec — FINAL Back in her cream pajamas she lies down. Close-up in bed, the same framing as the first shot: the white paw settles onto her cheek and stays. Her eyes are already closed. MOUTH OPENS SPEAKS OUT LOUD — small, almost asleep, asking: 「明日は何着てくる?」 HARD CUT TO BLACK. Acting keywords: paw on a sleeping cheek, waking nose to nose with a cat, flattened bed hair, dry food rattling into a bowl, a whole cat face in the bowl, water thrown on a face with both hands, a cat scooped up in two hands, a door pushed open with a foot, one foot landing outside, white fur filling the whole frame, a dressed man standing where the cat was, hands still raised, a head-to-toe judging look, one shutter, walking side by side, a face lifted into the sun, a head snapping after a bird, stepping only on shade, a half-beat late bow, a head snapping toward fish on ice, working nostrils, a hand drifting out on its own, being towed past by the sleeve, a head still turned backward, an arm's-length photo, a face turned back by the jaw, a third-try shutter, white fur filling the frame again inside the door, an arm dropping as a hand goes empty, a cat sitting where the man stood, a paw settling on a cheek, a small sleepy question, hard cut. Negative: no subtitles, no text, no readable writing anywhere, no logo, no watermark; no background music and no score of any kind; the cat and the man are never in the same shot; no half-changed state, no cat ears, tail or whiskers on the man; no clothes left on the ground after a change; no glow, sparkle or magic beyond the two bursts of white fur; the man never speaks; no timestamp or UI; hard cut, no fade.
